HISTORICAL INFORMATION The Anchorage was named in the 1890’s but the original name of the house was Mill Croft. The house once housed a grain mill set up by the Christian family in 1660 and you will can still see the three wheel arches from the garden and the shore.

The Anchorage has an interesting background, the book ” The Ginger Man ” by J.P. Donlevey (published in 1955) was part written in The Anchorage and there are several references to the property in the book. The Ginger Man was named one of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century by the Modern Library in 1998. It has sold 45 million copies world-wide and never been out of print.

In the late 1800’s this property was owned by Mr Charles Banks Nelson a member of the old and respected Bride family. His father and grandfather were Rectors of Bride. Mr C.B.Nelson was the Chairman of the Manx Northern Railway Company and was a Director of the Dumbells Bank for many years, he was involved in the Dumbells Bank trial and served 5 years penal servitude for publication of false balance sheets. In 1895 he returned to Ramsey working as a Lawyer’s Clerk, managed to clear his debts and was admitted to the Manx Bar by Lieutenant Governor Raglan. Mr C.B.Nelson sold The Anchorage to William Goldstraw in September 1896 for £113.00 Mr Goldstraw died in 1917 and the property was sold to Mr Walter Brown. It was then sold in a Coroner’s Auction to the Calvert family in 1933. The anchor which can be seen at the front of the property was purchased by Mr Harry Reeves from Laxey harbour in the 1980’s.
